The Sumatra Indonesia Barbie is one of the most visually commanding entries in Mattel's Pink Label Dolls of the World Asia series — drawing on the elaborate ceremonial dress traditions of Sumatra's bridal and festival culture, where songket weaving takes months to produce by hand with gold and silver threads worked into silk on a traditional backstrap loom.

Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world, home to some of the most layered textile and jewellery traditions in Southeast Asia, and the Pink Label series gave this doll a budget and a brief that matched the subject matter — the result is one of the harder Asia-series entries to find in the original box, and the one that tends to stop people mid-browse.
