The Princess Collection Princess and the Pea is the 2005 entry in the storybook character series — a dazzling purple glitter bodice, a layered gown with considerable sweep, and the fairytale construction that the Princess Collection brought consistently to its character releases. It is a strong visual translation of a story that offers limited obvious costume cues, which makes the execution here more interesting than it might first appear.

Hans Christian Andersen's original story is really about class anxiety and social performance dressed up as romance, which makes it a more fitting Barbie adaptation than most people give it credit for.
