Ireland Got a Fiddle, Germany Got Lederhosen, France Got Breton Lace — and Tommy Finally Got to Go to Europe

The 2005 Friends of the World Europe giftset is the second Pink Label Kelly-scaled 25th Anniversary entry, covering Ireland, Germany and France. The Irish figure holds a miniature fiddle and wears a green step-dance dress. The French figure wears a yellow and blue Breton-style dress with white lace overlay. Germany's representative is Tommy — the male Kelly companion — in brown lederhosen, a white shirt and an alpine hat with a red feather, which gives the 2005 set a different visual dynamic from any other Dolls of the World entry. Tommy gets very few moments in the spotlight. This is one of them. The Toys R Us price sticker ($19.99) dates these to the 2005 retail season.

The Breton stripe on the French doll is not a random choice. The marinière, the striped jersey worn by French naval sailors since the 1850s, was popularised as mainstream fashion by Coco Chanel in the 1910s and has been the visual shorthand for "French" ever since. Mattel's designers knew exactly what they were doing. The miniature fiddle included with the Irish doll is the first accessory to go missing in any surviving set — which is either a comment on the fragility of small musical instruments or on how irresistible a tiny fiddle is to anyone under ten.
