Aquarius Is Not a Water Sign — the Name Is Misleading and the Astrologers Have Always Known It

Despite the water jug, Aquarius is an air sign — one of astrology's most persistent misconceptions, which the sign's personality profile (independent, cerebral, humanitarian, firmly committed to doing things their own way) does nothing to correct. The 2004 Pink Label Zodiac Aquarius Barbie wears a periwinkle blue glitter mermaid gown with a pink faux fur stole — a colour pairing that sits in productive tension with the coolness of the blue and gives the doll a visual warmth that the neighbouring Capricorn and Pisces dolls don't share. The water-bearer symbol is in rhinestones on the bodice, and the auburn-streaked hair gives the figure more warmth still against the blue palette.

Aquarius runs January 20 to February 18 — the dead middle of the year's least celebratory stretch — and has historically been underserved by birthday merchandise compared to the October-December signs, who occupy the seasons with better commercial infrastructure. Mattel's zodiac doll addressed this somewhat. The periwinkle and pink combination, which sounds like it shouldn't work, is one of the more quietly successful design decisions in the twelve-doll run — and the zodiac charm bracelet, doll stand and Certificate of Authenticity are all included.
