Princess of Ancient Mexico Barbie wears the dress of an Aztec noblewoman — a vivid green and gold diamond-patterned huipil with a red fringed shawl, an elaborate feathered headdress in blue, red and green quetzal feathers, and a golden disk necklace — drawing on the visual culture of the Aztec Empire at its peak, before Hernán Cortés and six hundred soldiers managed to dismantle the largest empire in Mesoamerica in 1521.

The quetzal feathers on this headdress are not decorative shorthand — quetzal birds were sacred in Mesoamerican culture, their long tail feathers reserved for the nobility and unavailable to anyone else, which makes the feathered headdress on this doll a considerably more politically loaded accessory than it appears. The Princess Collection came with a collector passport, and this entry earned it.
