Product Description

The Kokoshnik Is the Crown That Survived the Revolution — Mattel Put It on Barbie in 2004 and Got the History Right

Princess of Imperial Russia Barbie is the 2004 Pink Label 25th Anniversary Dolls of the World entry, dressed in court fashion from the Romanov era: a red velvet and gold brocade sarafan over a white blouse with gold trim, and a kokoshnik — the tall, fan-shaped headdress that was the defining headgear of the Russian imperial aristocracy. The kokoshnik didn't disappear with the Romanovs in 1918. It survived through folk culture, resurfaced in Soviet-era ballet costuming, and was revived by Russian fashion designers after the Soviet Union collapsed as a deliberate symbol of pre-revolutionary identity. The court version Barbie wears here is gold, ornate, and unambiguous about whose party she's dressed for.

The Romanov family were executed at Yekaterinburg in July 1918, meaning by 2004 they had been gone for 86 years. Mattel put their court fashion on a doll for the 25th anniversary of a series that launched in 1980. The box shows St Basil's Cathedral in the background — built in 1555, which predates the Romanovs by about sixty years, and is therefore one of the only things in the image that has nothing to apologise for historically. Someone at Mattel did their homework.

Our photos are part of the product description, so please take the time to review them carefully before purchasing.

All items are sold in the condition described and shown. These are real pieces with real history, and we think that's part of what makes them special.

📦 Carded & Boxed Items
Vintage packaging can show its age — you may see card yellowing, corner wear, bubble discolouration or light crushing, and sticker residue. The item inside is typically untouched. What you see is what you get.

🤖 Loose Figures & Playsets
Loose vintage figures and playsets may show paint wear, light scuffing, or minor marks from years of storage or play. Accessories are noted in the listing — if it isn't mentioned, it's not included.

🧸 Plush & Soft Toys
Vintage plush can show pile flattening, light colour fade, or gentle wear at seams and features. We note any significant issues in the listing, and our photos show the piece as it truly is.

📚 Books & Paper Goods
Paper ages beautifully — but it does age. Vintage books may show spine wear, light browning, or minor cover scuffs. Any notable marks or damage are called out in the listing description.

Modern Collectibles
Modern collectibles are described with the same care and accuracy as our vintage items. As a recent release, stock or manufacturer imagery may be used in place of personal photography — this will always be noted in the listing.
