Pretty Princess Barbie arrived in 2003, two years before Princess and the Pauper in 2004 and three before The Princess and the Pop Star in 2006 — at the beginning of the cultural build that would eventually make princess the dominant Barbie theme of the decade and set the template for how Mattel positioned the brand for the next fifteen years.

The hot pink glitter ballgown with gold scroll bodice and right arm extended upward is a very deliberate visual statement — the princess pose, already in the process of becoming the default Barbie image, here with the theatrical arm gesture that signals to any child who sees it exactly what kind of story this doll belongs to.
