Actual Norse Helmets Had No Wings — the Winged Version Was Invented by 19th-Century Romantic Painters and This Princess Wears It Anyway

Princess of the Vikings Barbie wears a moulded golden breastplate with intricate knotwork detailing and a bold golden helmet complete with bifurcated wing ornamentation — the most recognisable piece of Viking iconography in the world, and entirely invented. Actual Norse helmets were simple rounded iron bowls without horns or wings. The winged version was largely created by 19th-century Romantic painters and then enthusiastically adopted by everyone else.

The winged helmet has been so thoroughly absorbed into the visual language of the Viking age that correcting people about it at this point feels churlish — and Princess of the Vikings, arriving from the DOTW Princess Collection with a sword at her waist and a collector passport in the box, is not trying to be a history lesson. She is trying to be a princess. On those terms, she succeeds completely.
