Birthday Wishes B9786 is the 2003 Collector Edition brunette in a yellow gown — glitter-print shantung bodice, satin ribbon accent, full chiffon and taffeta skirt, faux flower hair ornament, pearl necklace, earrings and a small wrapped yellow gift prop for the doll to carry. The packaging is the actual concept: the box is designed as a self-wrapping gift, the ribbon and bow are built into the exterior, the gift card on the front is blank for a name, and the whole thing is ready to hand over without any additional wrapping. Someone at Mattel had a genuinely good idea in 2003 and they used it.

The yellow B9786 is the rarer of the two 2003 Birthday Wishes brunettes — B9788 in purple turns up far more frequently on the secondary market, which tells you something about relative production numbers without Mattel ever confirming the figures. The Birthday Wishes series had started as a play-line gift concept in 1998 before graduating to Collector Edition production values with the Bob Mackie face mould — a significant upgrade for what was, at its core, a birthday present. The self-wrapping box is the detail that makes this actually worth buying for someone's birthday rather than just adding to a shelf.
