Sharon Zuckerman Designed the Second Grand Entrance the Same Year Carter Bryant Quit Mattel and Launched Bratz

Grand Entrance Barbie 2001 is the second in a series celebrating named Mattel in-house designers — Sharon Zuckerman's entry, in a pink and coral floral-embroidered ballgown with long red gloves and a gold necklace. The first Grand Entrance, a year earlier, was designed by Carter Bryant. A Guide to Collecting is tucked into the back of the box, which is the kind of packaging detail that signals this is a purchase for someone who is already serious about what they're doing. The series was built on the premise that the designers themselves were the story.

Carter Bryant left Mattel shortly after designing the first Grand Entrance and launched Bratz in 2001 — the same year Zuckerman's doll arrived at retail. Bratz went on to capture 40% of the fashion doll market within five years, triggering a $500 million lawsuit from Mattel and one of the most litigated toy industry disputes in American commercial history. The Guide to Collecting packed in with this doll does not mention any of that.
