The Calla Lily Barbie is the third entry in Mattel's Flowers in Fashion series — a Limited Edition run that dressed Barbie as specific blooms with the kind of commitment that required an entire jacket shaped like a flower. The calla lily is not actually a lily — it belongs to the Zantedeschia genus and is native to southern Africa, where it was imported to Europe in the 17th century and became associated with purity and resurrection in Victorian floriography.

The ivory satin jacket shaped to mirror the calla lily in full bloom — the sweeping overlap of fabric that frames her face — is the design detail that makes this entry stand out in the Flowers in Fashion run. The jet-black hair, the green silk skirt and the long charmeuse gloves give the whole thing an editorial quality that sits closer to fashion illustration than to dolls.
