Princess and the Pea Barbie dresses the heroine of Hans Christian Andersen's 1835 fairy tale — published in the same collection as The Tinderbox and Little Claus and Big Claus, reportedly based on an old folk tale — and comes with a small pillow with a tiny green pea sewn to the centre. The pea is the point. Everything else is supporting evidence.

The test at the heart of the story — that a true princess can be identified by her sensitivity to a pea hidden under twenty mattresses — is the kind of diagnostic that modern sleep scientists would describe as both very difficult to replicate and not especially statistically valid. Andersen published it in 1835. It has not stopped being told since.
