Every Barbie Silhouette From Forty Years of Fashion Is Printed Around the Skirt — and the Dress She's Wearing Is the One That Started It All

Timeless Silhouette Barbie is a 2000 Avon exclusive that dressed Barbie in a 1950s full-circle silhouette — luxuriously full skirt, tulle shawl, pearl necklace, long white gloves — and then printed the history of that silhouette around the hem. The pink and white skirt features Barbie figures from across the decades in various iconic poses, making the gown itself a kind of archive in fabric. The box carries the same design language: pink squares with Barbie silhouettes at different scales covering every surface. It is the most specifically self-referential Barbie of the 2000 release year, and possibly of any release year.

Avon and Mattel had an exclusive partnership for collector Barbie dolls that ran through the nineties and into the early 2000s, producing dolls available only through Avon representatives — not in stores, not through Mattel's own retail partnerships. Timeless Silhouette was one of the more ambitious of these Avon exclusives: dressing Barbie in 1959-era fashion to mark the turn of the millennium gave it a genuine anniversary logic (Barbie had debuted at the New York Toy Fair in March 1959), and the skirt-as-archive gave it a visual sophistication that most Avon Barbie releases didn't quite reach.
