The Munchkins Were Paid Less Than Toto the Dog — Kelly Arrived Sixty Years Later in a Pink Hat With a Rose on the Brim

Kelly as Lullaby Munchkin is a 1999 Mattel release from The Wizard of Oz collection — standing in front of the painted Munchkin Village backdrop with vivid red curly hair, freckles, and a tall pointed pink metallic hat trimmed with pink tulle ruching and a small rose at the brim.

The Munchkins in the 1939 MGM film were played by 124 actors, most of them members of a travelling troupe called Leo Singer's Midgets. They were paid $50 per week — less than Toto the cairn terrier, who earned $125. The disparity reportedly remained a sore point for decades among the performers who remembered it, which gives the cheerful pink hat a somewhat complicated legacy that the certificate of authenticity does not address.
