Barbie Goes to the Annual Cherry Blossom Picnic in Downtown Tokyo — and She Dresses Accordingly

Spring in Tokyo is the fourth entry in Mattel's City Seasons Collection — the 1999 Collector Edition series that sent Barbie to a different world city for each seasonal release. The Tokyo entry is the Spring outing: Barbie attends the Annual Springtime Picnic under the cherry blossom trees in downtown Tokyo, dressed in a cream shantung silk suit with navy trim and ruffled collar detailing, a wide-brimmed hat with navy mesh veil, a pearl and gold chain necklace, and a gold-chain handbag in navy. The face uses a sculpt with dark brown ponytailed hair and defined brows — a more tailored look than the standard play-line Barbie of the same period.

The City Seasons Collection covered four releases: Autumn in Paris, Winter in Montreal, Summer in San Francisco, and Spring in Tokyo — each with a city-specific outfit and cultural reference point. Spring in Tokyo is the only Asian city in the set, and the cream-and-navy palette with the wide veiled hat is a reference to the kind of refined Showa-era Japanese fashion that the cherry blossom season represented. The series came with a certificate of authenticity, doll stand and reply card.
