Celebration Cake Barbie arrived in 1999 with one of the more literal play concepts in the Barbie line: the tiered skirt of the doll is a decoratable cake surface, and the set includes two tubes of real frosting, sprinkles, a decorating dish and assorted piping tips to dress it. Barbie herself wears a pink ruffled bodice above the cake-skirt, with blonde hair in a high updo. The cake skirt is a rinse-and-repeat surface — frost it, display it, wash it off, frost it again.

The Celebration Cake concept sits in an interesting category of Barbie play-line: the doll as activity prop, where the toy is less about the doll's narrative and more about what the child does with the accessory. Mattel produced a number of these activity-focused releases through the late nineties — Bubble Fairy used a spin mechanism for bubble-blowing; Celebration Cake used edible supplies for decorating. The frosting is well past its best-before date and should be considered a display element at this point, but the mechanism itself — the wipe-clean cake surface — holds up as a play concept.
