The Holiday Sisters Gift Set brings Barbie, Stacie and Kelly together in coordinated Christmas outfits — the first entry in a series that would run from 1998 to 2003 and became one of Mattel's most successful seasonal gift sets of the era. The matching red coats with white faux fur trim, scaled from Barbie's floor-length version down to Kelly's miniature romper, is the kind of design decision that looks simple and is actually very considered.
1998 was the year the Spice Girls phenomenon was at its peak, girl-group energy was the defining pop cultural force on the planet, and three sisters in matching Christmas coats was exactly the right idea for the toy aisle in December. The Holiday Sisters series has a dedicated collector following, and the 1998 first entry is the one that started it.
