Barbie and Ken Decided to Be Pirates — and They Matched, Because of Course They Did

The Halloween Party Barbie and Ken Gift Set was a 1998 Target Special Edition — one of the seasonal giftsets that Target commissioned from Mattel through the nineties, each sold exclusively through the chain. Barbie is dressed as a pirate wench: a red peasant blouse with white ruffled sleeves, red and white striped skirt, red headscarf with a pink bow, and a gold and purple sash belt. Ken matches as the captain: a purple peasant shirt under a black velvet waistcoat with gold trim, red and white striped trousers, a wide red sash, and the skull-and-crossbones captain's hat with a gold loop earring. The box has a full Halloween party interior backdrop.

Target's seasonal Barbie exclusives from this era were produced in meaningful quantities but rarely show up complete and in box — the Halloween Party set in particular, because the October release window meant many examples were opened immediately rather than put away. The matched pirate costume concept was one of the better executions of the couples giftset format: the colour coordination between Barbie's headscarf and Ken's sash is clearly deliberate and gives the pair a visual coherence that not all the Halloween giftsets managed.
