Summer in San Francisco Barbie was designed by Robert Best as the inaugural entry in the City Seasons collection — an FAO Schwarz exclusive that sent Barbie to a different city each season, starting with San Francisco in summer 1998. FAO Schwarz had been selling toys from its Fifth Avenue flagship since 1862, and by the late nineties it was the defining luxury toy destination in America — the kind of retailer where an exclusive designed by a named designer felt entirely appropriate.

Robert Best joined Mattel as a senior designer in 1996 and became one of the most influential figures in collector Barbie history — his work for FAO Schwarz, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom through the late nineties represents some of the most design-literate Barbie output of the era, and Summer in San Francisco, the first in his City Seasons series, is the entry that established what the series would become.
