Christie Plays Keyboards in a Fictional Pop Band and Her Keytar Has Glow-in-the-Dark Keys — 1998 Committed to the Bit

Christie is the keyboard player in Beyond Pink, the 1998 Barbie band concept, dressed in a yellow graphic top and black jeans with green platform shoes. Her instrument is a keytar — a guitar-shaped keyboard held like a guitar — with glow-in-the-dark accents that operate in the dark as promised on the box. The cassette inside the packaging contains "Think Pink" on Side A and the instrumental version on Side B, produced under the Sony Wonder label with Epic Records Group in the Euro-electronic pop style that dominated children's music in the late nineties. Christie uses the Christie head mould with silver-streaked box braids — a distinctive look that makes her immediately identifiable in the three-doll set.

The Beyond Pink line arrived at a specific cultural moment: girl groups had been commercially dominant since the Spice Girls' 1996 debut, and Mattel's fictional band was a direct attempt to place Barbie and her friends inside that cultural space. The three dolls together — Barbie, Christie and Teresa — gave the concept a complete band lineup, each with a different instrument and a different colourway, and the cassette gave the purchase a media dimension that the standard fashion doll line couldn't match.
