Beyond Pink was a 1998 Barbie concept that committed fully to the fiction: Barbie, Christie and Teresa as a girl band with an original song, "Think Pink," produced under the Sony Wonder label and released on a real cassette tape packed inside each doll's box. Barbie is the guitarist in the group, dressed in a hot pink geometric-pattern mini dress with a V-shaped electric guitar, glow-in-the-dark accents, and black knee-high boots. The stage-set packaging — truss towers, coloured spotlights, a purple concert backdrop — places her firmly on a stage rather than in a bedroom.

The Euro-electronic pop sound of "Think Pink" is a genuinely interesting cultural artefact: produced in 1998 at the peak of the teen pop era that would shortly produce the Spice Girls' commercial peak, Britney Spears' debut and *NSYNC's first album, it sounds exactly like what it is — a children's brand attempting to access the girl-group energy of the late nineties at the level of a cassette single. The three Beyond Pink dolls were designed to be displayed together, and the matching stage-set boxes mean they line up on a shelf like a full band photocall.
