French Lady Barbie was released in 1997 as part of the Great Eras Collection, a Collector Edition series that placed Barbie in historically significant fashion periods. This entry represents the Belle Epoque - the roughly 1871 to 1914 era of French cultural dominance when Paris was the undisputed capital of fashion, art, and cafe society. The doll wears an elaborate upswept hairstyle with jewelled hair ornaments, drop earrings, and a blue bead necklace, her face portrait presented in an oval cameo illustration on the box front.

The Great Eras Collection ran through the nineties, placing Barbie in the Gibson Girl era, the Flapper era, the Medieval period, and the Southern Belle period among others - essentially a history of women's fashion through the lens of a licensed doll, which is one way to teach it.
