Cool Blue Barbie is baggy corduroy overalls over a pastel stripe turtleneck, a soft blue beret, a thumb ring that was absolutely everywhere in 1997 and a brush-on blue hair colorant in the box that was washable, non-toxic and designed to work on both the doll and the child — one of those Barbies that invited her owner into the look rather than positioning her as the observer of someone else's style.

The late nineties were the era of the wash-out hair colour, the temporary dye, the idea that you could try something bold without committing to it — and Cool Blue Barbie was the doll that captured that particular freedom with the most directness, giving children the actual materials to participate rather than just a doll dressed in the aesthetic.
