GAP Barbie is a 1996 Special Edition store exclusive dressed head to toe in GAP — khaki trousers, GAP logo t-shirt, chambray shirt, denim jacket, colourful scarf, and a GAP shopping bag with jeans inside it, because that's what you do when you go to GAP. The box backdrop is a GAP store interior with neatly folded shirts on shelves behind her. She also has a GAP backpack and a GAP cap. She bought a lot of things. GAP was worth it in 1996.

The GAP's "Who wore khakis?" campaign had run in 1993, placing Miles Davis and James Dean in the brand's aesthetic and making a chino feel like a cultural statement. By 1996 the chain was genuinely at the apex of its cultural power — the moment before fast fashion made a "good basic" feel less like an identity. The African American version (16450) was produced in smaller numbers and trades at a significant premium on the secondary market. The blonde at 16449 is the more commonly found of the two, which remains one of the more ironic sentences in the whole of Barbie collecting.
