Barbie Meets a 1907 Coca-Cola Advertisement, and the Result Is the Best Doll of the Series

Soda Fountain Sweetheart Barbie was the first release in Mattel's Coca-Cola Fashion Classic Series, launched in 1996 as a Collector Edition pairing two of America's most recognisable brands. The doll is directly inspired by a real 1907 Coca-Cola advertisement — the white skirt with red polka dots, red lace capelet, flower-trimmed hat, parasol and the Coca-Cola glass and holder she carries are all drawn from that specific source image. The attention to period detail is unusually high for a licensed collaboration doll of this era.

The Coca-Cola Fashion Classic Series ran for several entries and became one of the more collectible Barbie collaboration lines of the 1990s, but the first release has a particular appeal — the 1907 source material is evocative enough to carry the whole concept, and the Edwardian silhouette gives this doll a visual character that the later entries in the series, which drew from different decades, never quite matched. The book-style display box with its Coca-Cola brand history text on the interior panels adds a collector presentation quality to what is already a well-conceived release.
