Cynthia Young Designed the Fifth Classique in 1996 and the Box Looks Like a Fashion Magazine That Probably Costs More Than the Doll

Starlight Dance Barbie is the fifth entry in the Classique Collection — Mattel's designer-credited series in which named in-house Barbie designers created Collector Edition dolls packaged in boxes styled as fashion magazine covers. Cynthia Young's 1996 entry wears an off-white silky crepe gown with glittering chiffon panels, ruffles at the sides, and a sheer rhinestone-studded fitted bodice. The accessories include holographic bracelets, earrings and a headband. The hair is swept into a dramatic updo. The box describes the concept as "a heavenly dream in white for starlit nights," which is the tagline the illustrated cover treatment was designed to earn. Young is less widely referenced than some of her Classique contemporaries, which makes this entry one of the less immediately name-checked in the series.

The Classique Collection ran from 1992 to 1997, producing designer-credited dolls from Ann Driskill (Port Wine Barbie, 1992), Carol Spencer (Benefit Ball Barbie, 1992), Kitty Black Perkins (Uptown Chic, 1993), Janet Goldblatt (Evening Extravaganza, 1994), and Cynthia Young (Starlight Dance, 1996). The series established the in-house designer as a named collector commodity — a precedent that the broader Barbie collector market absorbed and continued long after the Classique line ended. The magazine cover box format was the series' defining visual identity, and Starlight Dance is one of the more elegantly executed examples of it.
