This Is the Barbie You Could Only Buy From Someone Who Came to Your Door — Avon's Spring Petals, Second in a Series, 1996

Spring Petals Barbie is the second in Avon's Spring Petals series, released in 1996 as an Avon Exclusive Special Edition — which means the only way to get one in 1996 was through an Avon representative, the direct sales model that had been running since 1886 and in 1996 still reached millions of households through a network of independent sellers. The doll wears a floral print sundress in pink, purple, yellow and green over a pink gingham underskirt with a matching gingham bow at the waist, and she carries a bouquet of pink, purple and yellow fabric flowers. The box is a watercolour painting of spring flowers tied with a gingham ribbon — the same bow that appears on the doll, which is a considered design decision.

Avon's Barbie partnership produced a consistent line of dolls through the nineties that operated entirely outside the standard retail distribution network. No Toys R Us, no department stores, no catalogue — just Avon representatives and their customer books. The Spring Petals series had launched with a first entry the year before; the second in any Avon Barbie series is consistently harder to find than the first, partly because collector attention tends to follow the first entry and partly because Avon's distribution network made all of these inherently less predictable in terms of numbers. The watercolour box art is the visual signature of the Spring Petals line and makes these immediately identifiable among the broader Avon Barbie range.
