Jewel Princess Barbie was released in 1995 as the third entry in the Limited Edition Winter Princess Collection, which ran from 1993 to 1998 and was notable for its packaging: each entry featured painted box art in the style of a vintage fashion magazine cover rather than a photograph of the doll, giving the series a visual coherence that made it immediately identifiable on a shelf. Jewel Princess wears a red velvet jacket with jewelled star brooches, fur-trimmed collar, a tartan skirt, and a tilted red beret with a star pin.

The Winter Princess Collection's use of painted illustration on the box front was a deliberate design decision that distinguished it from the photograph-led packaging of most Barbie ranges, aligning the series aesthetically with high-fashion illustration traditions of the twenties through fifties.
