Victorian Lady Barbie is the eighth volume in the Great Eras Collection, released in 1995. The box copy opens with a line that belongs to another era entirely: "It was a time when dainty ladies wore velvet and lace, and never had a hair out of place." Mattel was not wrong — the Victorian era ran from 1837 to 1901 and produced a very specific aesthetic. The doll wears an authentic velvety burgundy gown with loads of ivory lace and an elegant bustle at the back, mauve rosettes on each side of the skirt, and a marabou headpiece. Her long dark hair is braided in the back and styled into a demure Victorian updo. She has rooted eyelashes. This is a lot of specific detail for a doll box, and all of it is correct.

The Great Eras Collection pink book-style box with its oval portrait cameo on the cover is one of the more elegant packaging formats in the mid-nineties Barbie range — it looks like a Victorian keepsake album, which for the Victorian Lady entry is either a very deliberate design decision or a very satisfying coincidence. The gold rope tassel on the spine is the detail that makes it. By Volume 8 the series was well established and the collector base was tracking it across all the numbered entries — which is the point at which any series entry becomes relevant not just on its own terms but as part of a complete set.
