Product Description

German Barbie Arrived to Oktoberfest in 1995 in Full Dirndl With Her Braids Wrapped in Circles in the Traditional Bavarian Style — and Someone Put a Ben Franklin Craft Store Sticker on the Box

German Barbie from the 1995 Dolls of the World Collection is dressed for Oktoberfest — the traditional Bavarian festival of dancing, food and, historically, a very great deal of beer. She wears a dark bodice with gold trim and ruffled white cuffs, a full red skirt trimmed in black, a white apron and a fringed white shawl. Her blonde braids are wrapped in circular coils at the sides of her head, tied with blue ribbon — a genuinely traditional German style that Mattel reproduced accurately. The Ben Franklin craft and variety store price sticker ($19.99) on surviving boxes places this very specifically in the American Midwest, where Ben Franklin operated its network of craft and fabric stores through the mid-nineties.

This is the second German Barbie Dolls of the World entry — the first came in 1987 (#3188). Mattel returned to Germany for the 1995 edition, which is not unusual for popular Dolls of the World countries: the series revisited multiple countries across its forty-year run as the designer roster, face moulds, and cultural research updated. Oktoberfest itself began in 1810 as a wedding celebration for the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. It was supposed to be a one-off. By 1995 it was the largest folk festival in the world, and Mattel had dressed Barbie for it twice.

All items are sold in the condition described and shown. These are real pieces with real history, and we think that's part of what makes them special.

📦 Carded & Boxed Items
Vintage packaging can show its age — you may see card yellowing, corner wear, bubble discolouration or light crushing, and sticker residue. The item inside is typically untouched. What you see is what you get.

Loose vintage figures and playsets may show paint wear, light scuffing, or minor marks from years of storage or play. Accessories are noted in the listing — if it isn't mentioned, it's not included.

Vintage plush can show pile flattening, light colour fade, or gentle wear at seams and features. We note any significant issues in the listing, and our photos show the piece as it truly is.

📚 Books & Paper Goods
Paper ages beautifully — but it does age. Vintage books may show spine wear, light browning, or minor cover scuffs. Any notable marks or damage are called out in the listing description.

Modern Collectibles
Modern collectibles are described with the same care and accuracy as our vintage items. As a recent release, stock or manufacturer imagery may be used in place of personal photography — this will always be noted in the listing.
