Sindy Goes to the Beach, and It Is 1994, and Everything Is Tie-Dye

Paradise Sindy was Hasbro's 1994 beach release for the British fashion doll market — a sun-and-sea concept that gave Sindy the full nineties treatment with a vibrant tie-dye one-piece swimsuit in pink, green, yellow and blue, long straight blonde hair, and the casual beachwear aesthetic that dominated toy packaging art of the mid-nineties. The original blonde version (18409) came with a promotional insert offering the chance to win one of 35 colour televisions, which is simultaneously extremely 1994 and an excellent detail.

Sindy was Pedigree's British-born fashion doll, launched in 1963 as a direct domestic competitor to Barbie and eventually acquired by Hasbro in 1986. The Hasbro-era Sindy dolls of the early-to-mid nineties occupy a slightly different aesthetic territory from their Barbie contemporaries — a little less maximalist, a little more British high-street — which makes them a genuinely distinct collecting category rather than simply a Barbie alternative. Paradise Sindy is a good representative example of Hasbro's mid-nineties beach line.
