The Watch on Her Wrist Is for You — and It Actually Tells the Time

Party Time Barbie arrived in 1994 as a Special Edition with a gimmick that Mattel had used selectively since the eighties: a real working watch packaged alongside the doll, scaled for the child rather than the doll. The watch has a pale pink lace-print strap with a round face showing a Barbie portrait — small enough to wear, functional enough to actually tell the time. The doll herself wears a powder-blue party dress with a wide white lace collar, a pink sash bow at the waist, and an upswept blonde hairstyle. A matching doll-sized version of the watch comes with the set so Barbie and her owner can coordinate.

The Party Time release was part of a Special Edition series that paired affordable play-line dolls with a bonus accessory for the child — in this case the watch, which used a standard quartz movement and requires a battery replacement after thirty-plus years but is otherwise a fully functional timepiece. The lace-strap design is very specifically 1994 in its aesthetic — the combination of pastel blue, white lace and a Barbie portrait dial belongs entirely to that particular mid-nineties moment.
