Victorian Elegance Barbie is the first in a series of Special Edition dolls created exclusively for Hallmark Cards, released in 1994. The concept came from a specific antique Victorian-era greeting card discovered in the Hallmark Design Collections — a winter skating scene of a woman in maroon velvet with cream fur trim. Mattel reproduced that image exactly: brunette Barbie in a maroon velvet skating costume and bonnet, cream faux fur collar and muff, ice skates included. Two miniature reproduction cards from the Hallmark Victorian archive are tucked in alongside, making the source material and the doll available in the same package. Someone thought this through.

The teal damask book-style box with its photographic portrait of the doll on the front cover is one of the most distinctive packages in the entire mid-nineties Barbie range — it looks like a Victorian keepsake album, which is entirely the point. Hallmark had been producing cards since 1910 and had an archive deep enough to pull a specific 19th-century skating scene for a 1994 toy. The Victorian Elegance series ran for several entries, but the first has the strongest case — the original archival source, the original box format, and the ice skates that are the first thing to disappear from any surviving example.
