Product Description
The Hennin Was Popularised by Isabelle of Bavaria in 1385 — Mattel Put It on Great Eras Volume 5 in 1994 and Called It the Very Latest in Millinery
Medieval Lady Barbie is the fifth volume in Mattel's Great Eras Collection, released in 1994. She wears a dark blue floor-length velvet gown with gold trim, a faux fur collar, colourful sleeve detailing, and a golden hennin — the tall conical hat with a trailing veil that is the single most recognisable piece of headwear from the 15th-century European court. The box copy credits the hennin specifically to Isabelle of Bavaria, who popularised the style when she married Charles VI of France in 1385, and describes it as "the very latest in millinery." In 1385, yes. In 1994, this framing required a certain confidence. Mattel had it.
The Great Eras Collection ran as numbered volumes from 1993, taking Barbie through documented historical periods with a different costume for each — Gibson Girl, Flapper, Southern Belle, Egyptian Queen, Medieval Lady, and so on. The pink castle-wall book-style box is the visual signature that runs across the entire series, and the banner-style portrait of the doll on the cover gives each volume a heraldic quality that suits the medieval entry particularly well. Volume 5 is the point in the series where the format was fully established and the collector base was actively tracking it — which is usually when the individual entries start to matter more, not less.
Please note: Please note: The plastic has yellowing.

Our photos are part of the product description, so please take the time to review them carefully before purchasing.
All items are sold in the condition described and shown. These are real pieces with real history, and we think that's part of what makes them special.
📦 Carded & Boxed Items
Vintage packaging can show its age — you may see card yellowing, corner wear, bubble discolouration or light crushing, and sticker residue. The item inside is typically untouched. What you see is what you get.
🤖 Loose Figures & Playsets
Loose vintage figures and playsets may show paint wear, light scuffing, or minor marks from years of storage or play. Accessories are noted in the listing — if it isn't mentioned, it's not included.
🧸 Plush & Soft Toys
Vintage plush can show pile flattening, light colour fade, or gentle wear at seams and features. We note any significant issues in the listing, and our photos show the piece as it truly is.
📚 Books & Paper Goods
Paper ages beautifully — but it does age. Vintage books may show spine wear, light browning, or minor cover scuffs. Any notable marks or damage are called out in the listing description.
✨ Modern Collectibles
Modern collectibles are described with the same care and accuracy as our vintage items. As a recent release, stock or manufacturer imagery may be used in place of personal photography — this will always be noted in the listing.
