Product Description

Mattel Engineered a Self-Pedalling Bicycle in 1994 and Dressed the Whole Thing in Neon

Bicyclin' Barbie was released in 1994 with a genuine mechanical gimmick — a self-pedalling bicycle powered by leg movement, with Barbie's legs connected to the pedals so that the whole set actually rolls when placed on a flat surface. The colour palette is peak early-nineties: neon pink, lime green, and purple, with a matching helmet in hot pink and a water bottle clipped to the frame. The jacket has lightning bolts on it. No detail was left un-neon.

The self-pedalling mechanism is the kind of toy engineering that Mattel did consistently well in this era — practical enough to work reliably, simple enough to survive play, and specific enough to be genuinely surprising when you first encounter it. The Toys "R" Us price sticker still visible on some boxed examples places it firmly in a particular retail moment that no longer exists.
