Toys R Us Commissioned a Black and Gold Evening Gown and Called the Result Moonlight Magic — Which Is Correct

Moonlight Magic Barbie was a 1993 Special Limited Edition produced exclusively for Toys R Us — the chain that was at the peak of its cultural power in the early nineties, operating as the default destination for toy purchases across North America and much of Europe before the internet dissolved that geographic monopoly. The doll wears a floor-length black and gold gown with a gold-scrollwork embossed skirt, a black marabou feather wrap at the shoulders, and gold hair jewellery — a presentation that sits clearly at the collector end of the Toys R Us range rather than the play line shelf.

The Toys R Us annual Special Limited Edition Barbie was a consistent feature of the early-to-mid nineties collector market, and Moonlight Magic was among the more dramatic of them — the black and gold combination was unusual for the era and gave the doll a visual identity that distinguished it from the red, blue and pink that dominated most Special Edition releases of 1993. The African American version (10609) was released simultaneously. Both are among the harder Toys R Us exclusives from this period to find in the original box.
