Swim 'n Dive Barbie has a battery-powered mechanism in her pink oxygen tank — turn the knob and she actually kicks her legs and propels through the water, glittery rose-pink wetsuit on, mask and snorkel at the ready, operating with a level of autonomy that most 1993 dolls could only dream of.

The early nineties were a peak moment for interactive Barbie engineering — mechanisms that moved, lights that flashed, features that responded — and this underwater version is one of the most satisfying of the era, a doll that does something real and asks very little in return beyond two AA batteries.
