The Crown Fills With Water and Sprays It — Mattel Made a Working Fountain Doll in 1993

Fountain Mermaid Barbie arrived in 1993 with one of the more genuinely interactive mechanisms in the nineties fantasy line — the red coral crown on her head is a reservoir that fills with water and sprays a fountain when pressed. The pink-haired mermaid doll with her iridescent pink tail and hot pink ruffled bodice came packaged with the crown in the lower section of her scallop-shell display box, and the spray mechanism was designed to work over a tray or in a bath setting. The pink hair — a notable departure from Barbie's usual blonde — was part of the mermaid fantasy aesthetic that defined this sub-line.

The Fountain Mermaid was released at the height of Mattel's early-nineties mermaid wave, which included multiple sub-lines of fantasy sea-creature Barbies with increasingly elaborate water-interaction features. The crown spray mechanism is the most directly functional of these — it works exactly as described, makes Barbie an actual miniature fountain, and requires no batteries. Collectors of the mermaid Barbie sub-category tend to place Fountain Mermaid near the top of the line for concept execution.
