Dr. Barbie arrived in 1993 with one of the more memorable interactive features in the nineties play line — a pink stethoscope with a battery-operated mechanism that, when pressed against the bundled baby doll, played an actual thump-thump heartbeat sound. The concept was part of Mattel's broader charitable healthcare initiative that year, with proceeds directed toward children's health programmes, which gave Dr. Barbie a social dimension that most fashion doll releases of the era didn't attempt. She wears a blue dress with a white lab coat and a Barbie name badge, and comes with a baby doll in a pink blanket and a medical bag.

The Career Barbie line had been running since the early 1960s, but the 1993 Dr. Barbie represents one of the more complete career concepts Mattel produced — the interactive stethoscope, the baby patient, the medical accessories and the charitable tie-in gave the whole package a coherence that elevated it beyond a standard career outfit release. The Thump Thump stethoscope mechanism still works on many examples found in original packaging today.
