Uptown Chic is the third entry in the Classique Collection — Mattel's early-nineties designer series in which named in-house designers created Collector Edition dolls packaged in boxes styled as fashion magazine covers. Kitty Black Perkins designed this 1993 entry: a white vinyl coat with lace and rhinestone trim, a hat, jewellery and shoes, all in the leather-and-lace palette that had been commercially dominant since the late eighties and still had cultural legs in 1993. The box front is a hand-drawn fashion illustration in the style of a high fashion editorial sketch. It is the only thing in the toy aisle that looks like this.

Kitty Black Perkins joined Mattel in 1975 and became one of the most significant designers in the history of the Barbie line — primarily through her work establishing a distinct fashion identity for Black Barbie dolls through the eighties and nineties, including the Shani and Christie lines. Uptown Chic, designed for a white doll, was an unusual assignment for her, and the result is one of the more quietly interesting entries in the Classique series: the designer most celebrated for expanding what Barbie could look like, here dressing the default Barbie in something that is genuinely chic rather than merely pretty.
