Barbie Reads Mother Goose to Two Small Friends, and a Dollar Goes to Reading Is Fundamental

Barbie Love-to-Read was a 1992 Toys R Us Limited Edition gift set that came with Barbie in a floral and lavender striped dress alongside two small companion dolls — one blonde, one with dark curly hair — plus a miniature Little Golden Book of Mother Goose Rhymes. The set included a commitment from Mattel that one dollar from each purchase would go to Reading Is Fundamental, Inc., making this one of the earlier examples of a toy tie-in with a children's literacy charity. The reading games insert inside the box extended the educational angle further.

The three-doll format at two scales — Barbie at standard size alongside the smaller friends — gives the Love-to-Read set an unusual display configuration compared to a standard single-doll release. The literacy tie-in was a genuine partnership with one of America's most established children's reading charities, founded in 1966 and still operating today, which gives this 1992 set a social context that makes it more interesting than most retail exclusives of the era.
