Mattel Dressed Italian Barbie as a Neapolitan Dancer in 1992 and Not, Say, a Roman or a Milanese — Naples Got the Credit

Italian Barbie from the 1992 Dolls of the World Collection wears a costume traditional to folk dancers from the city of Naples specifically — a white peasant blouse under a red jacket with brocade trim, a layered skirt in blue, purple and gold stripes, hoop earrings, a pearl necklace and a yellow flower in her hair. The box opens with "Ciao!" and closes with "Arrivederci!" and notes that the costume reflects the mood of "this fun-loving country," which is the kind of brief that someone was given in a meeting in El Segundo in 1991.

Mattel's choice of Naples over Rome or Florence or Venice is an interesting one. Naples is the south — the working-class tradition, the city that gave the world pizza margherita in 1889, the birthplace of the tarantella, the origin of most Italian-American immigration to the United States in the early 20th century. Whether the decision was culturally deliberate or simply driven by the visual appeal of the Neapolitan folk costume is not documented. But the costume is specific and accurate, and Naples earned the credit.
