Evening Flame Barbie is a 1991 Special Limited Edition created for the Home Shopping Club — arriving at exactly the moment when collector Barbie culture was establishing itself as a serious adult hobby rather than a children's interest. HSN Barbie exclusives were often the first collector-tier dolls available to the mass market without a department store trip, and the numbered gold wrist tag and certificate of authenticity gave each purchase the formal weight that the audience was starting to expect.

The Home Shopping Club launched in 1982 as a regional Florida broadcast and grew into one of the most significant exclusive toy retailers in America by the early nineties. Evening Flame — with her red ballgown, gold motif skirt and numbered certificate — is a document of that transition: the moment when the HSN model and the collector Barbie market found each other and both grew.
