Barbie for President first ran in 1992 — the set was copyrighted in 1991 and released as a Toys R Us Limited Edition gift set that came with two complete looks: a red and gold campaign suit for the trail and a star-spangled inaugural gown in red, white and blue for the victory party. The briefcase, earrings, ring, shoes, hairbrush and a child-sized Barbie for President campaign button complete a gift set that committed fully to the political concept. The box copy invites children to join the Barbie Campaign Party.

Barbie has run for President periodically since 1992 — every four years, more or less, coinciding with the US election cycle — and the 1991/1992 Toys R Us edition was the inaugural release of the concept. The star-spangled gown in the inaugural colourway is one of the more memorable pieces of Barbie fashion from the early nineties, and the gift set format gives this release a completeness that the single-doll versions lack. The campaign button for the child is a detail that hasn't aged at all.
