Summit Barbie was created to commemorate the first annual Barbie Summit of 1990 — an event that brought children from thirty countries together in New York to discuss peace, freedom, ecology and hunger. The doll comes with a numbered Summit insignia badge on her lapel and a child-size matching badge in the box, on the logic that the child holding her was also a participant.

The Barbie Summit was one of Mattel's most ambitious real-world initiatives, and it predated the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child coming into force by only a few months — which made the idea of children representing their countries in a formal summit feel less like a marketing exercise and more like a genuine reflection of where the conversation was going.
