Billie Burke Was Learning to Act in Talking Pictures on Set in 1939 — and Glinda Is the Most Serene Presence in the Entire Film

Glinda is from Multi Toys Corporation's 1988 50th Anniversary collection — released fifty years after the original MGM film, which had been a box office disappointment in 1939 and became one of the most watched films in television history only after CBS began broadcasting it annually in 1956.

Billie Burke, who played Glinda, was already 54 when the film was shot and had worked primarily in silent film — she was reportedly reminded by director Victor Fleming how to modulate her performance for a talking picture, which means that the most serene and composed presence in The Wizard of Oz was delivered by someone who was essentially learning a new craft on set and pulled it off so completely that no one has ever noticed.
