Seven and a Half Pounds of Costume, Four Hours to Apply, Stage Temperatures Over 100 Degrees — Bert Lahr Did Not Have an Easy Summer

The Cowardly Lion is from Multi Toys Corporation's 1988 50th Anniversary collection celebrating the MGM Wizard of Oz film — released exactly fifty years after the 1939 original, at a moment when the film was experiencing a significant cultural reassessment. The Badge of Courage medal on the cord around his neck is the prop that defines the character's arc: a lion who needed to be told he was brave before he could be.

Bert Lahr's performance as the Cowardly Lion required seven and a half pounds of lion costume and took over four hours to apply each day. Production reportedly had to stop filming in the afternoons because the stage lights raised the set temperature to over 100 degrees, which meant Lahr spent the summer of 1939 delivering one of cinema's most beloved comedic performances while slowly cooking inside a lion suit. The 50th Anniversary figure honours that.
