Russian Barbie 1916 is the first-issue release from Mattel's Dolls of the World collection, released in 1988 — one year before the Berlin Wall fell and three years before the Soviet Union ceased to exist — with Soviet Union printed on her packaging, St Basil's Cathedral as her box backdrop, and absolutely no reason to suspect that any of this would look like historical documentation within a decade.

The first-wave DOTW dolls came packaged with full paper travel kits — a scenic poster, a map, a guide book, play money, a passport and tickets — that made each box feel like an invitation to somewhere genuinely foreign, which in 1988, when Soviet Russia was still firmly behind the Iron Curtain, was not entirely metaphorical.
