Singing Sweethearts With the Cool Sound — Becky Showed Up in Green Satin and a Purple Guitarist Jacket and Owned the Stage

Becky is one of Barbie's bandmates in the 1988 Barbie and the Sensations line — a four-doll pop group concept that included Barbie, Bopsy, Becky and Belinda. Becky is the Asian character in the set, dressed in a green satin mini skirt, green metallic top, and a cream and purple jacket with musical note embroidery. She comes with green earrings, a microphone and roller skates, and the bright-pink music note-printed box includes a cassette of Sensations songs. A Kmart price sticker — $10.94 — remains on the original box, which is the kind of specific retail provenance that places a doll in a very particular moment of the American toy market.

The Sensations line also had an animated VHS special, Barbie and the Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth, released in 1987, which gave the band a narrative universe before the dolls arrived at retail. The concept was a direct successor to Barbie and the Rockers, which had debuted in 1986, and brought in a new cast of named bandmates rather than anonymous backup figures. Becky's Asian doll design using the Miko face mould was one of Mattel's more considered casting decisions in the line.
