Skating Star Barbie is a Canadian-market exclusive released in 1987 for the lead-up to the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics — white lace-trimmed skating dress, jewelled tiara headband, white figure skates and a bouquet of pink roses, the official Olympic rings badge on the bilingual French-English box placing her precisely in that moment of compulsory figures and sequinned costumes under stadium lights.

The 1988 Calgary Games were the ones that gave the world Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsled team, a Winter Olympics that became famous for its underdogs — and this Barbie, released in anticipation of all of that, captures the more traditional and romantic side of the same event with complete sincerity.
